How to Have a Wedding Reception You Actually Love

One of the best things about wedding trends in 2016 is the move towards capturing the personal side of a couple’s relationship and reflecting it in the wedding itself, versus following certain wedding traditions or styles for the sake of tradition. Nowhere is this more true than with your reception. You’ve gotten married; you’ve passed that threshold. Now it’s time to celebrate! Here’s how to throw a party you, your spouse, and your friends and family can truly enjoy as it reflects the true stars of the day: you and your spouse.

So first off, following our post last week on centerpieces, let’s add a quick addition to that post: consider playing with different materials and ideas to better reflect you and your spouse’s interests and personalities. If you have a collection of terrariums at home, well, here’s a great chance to expand that collection with these unorthodox centerpieces.

Now, when it comes to the décor, here is another perfect area for you to tell the story of you and your spouse, not to mention your friends and family. Integrate them into the decorations by salvaging some empty window panes and filling them with pictures of your loved ones so that they truly feel part of the celebrations!

And speaking of taking a walk down memory lane, when you and your spouse enter the reception, consider deviating from the conventional arm-in-arm stroll by running, skipping, even dancing into your reception. Just do what comes natural to you and that will speak volumes over tradition.

Now, what about the music? Obviously you’ll want to arm the DJ with a playlist of songs that mean something to you and your partner, but what about DJ’ing yourself? Just as you would take choreography lessons to learn your first dance as a married couple, more engaged-to-be-weds are learning how to mash-up their favorite songs and even participating in bride and groom turntable battles!

Finally, with music comes dancing and with dancing comes drinking. While having a full bar is always a win-win, consider doing something to elevate your bar by offering flights of locally-crafted beer. Not only does this support local brewers, but showcases your knowledge of beer, which is extremely trendy right now.  But only do this if you and your partner truly love beer because, like all the above options, they only work if they have personal meaning to you! So explore how you can translate your marriage into reception decorations and features and most of all, have fun!
