How to Change Your Name Before Your Wedding Day

For many spouses, their wedding days aren’t just the day they agree to a life of holy matrimony, it’s also the first day that many brides (and even a few grooms) will get to use their new last name. However, it’s a common misconception for many couples that once they get their marriage license, their name is then changed. But in truth, that is only the first step of several. Here is what you need to do.

As we just mentioned, you need to get your marriage license first and foremost, the original, or certified, one with the raised seal along with your new last name. If you didn’t have one sent to you after filing, be sure to call the clerk’s office where you filed your license and request that a copy be sent.

The next step is one that couples often aren’t aware of, but you’ll need to change your Social Security card. How do you do this? It’s actually rather simple; just go to the Social Security Administration’s website and fill out the application for a new card. Now, you won’t be changing your number, your name will be the only thing that is different. Once you fill out the application, mail it to your local Social Security Administration office. Not sure where that is? Click here to search for the one closest to you. Expect to receive your new card within 10 business days.

Next, you’ll need to go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles in order to receive your new license with your new last name on it. To ensure that you do not end up making repeated trips to the DMV—and trust us, it happens—bring every single form of identification that you can with you, including your old license, your certified marriage license, and above all, your new Social Security card.

Once you get the new Social Security card and driver’s license with your married name on them, create a list of all the other places and individuals you need to notify of the name change. For instance, if you’re setting up a joint bank account, you’ll want to your change your name by going to a branch location and be sure to bring along your new driver’s license and marriage license. Ask for new checks, debit, and credit cards in addition to changing the name on your accounts. From there, be sure to inform your employer, post office, credit card companies, and any other organization or company that has your old name on file.

And be sure to give yourself a big pat on the back when it is all done as it is not an overnight process!
